Looking after your teeth
Your teeth are important. They contribute to your appearance, you use them every day when you eat, and if you do not look after them, they can become quite painful...
The good news is that they are really very easy to care for.
Here are the three "essentials" of dental care:
- Brush at for 2 minutes at least twice a day.
- Have regular check-ups with your dentist.
- Eat sugary foods less often.
Regular brushing will prevent plaque build up on your teeth, and reduce the incidence of dental decay. It is important to have a good brushing technique. We will advise you on the best way to use your toothbrush when you visit us. Meanwhile, here are some important tips:
1) Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle and brush in a circular motion on the surfaces of the teeth.
2) Pay particular attention to the area where the teeth and gums meet: that is where most plaque collects.
3) Clean in between the teeth using floss, tape or inter-dental brushes. We will show you how to use these at your appointment.
4) Have a specific "order" in which you brush your teeth, e.g. start at top left and work to the right, then bottom right to bottom left. Stick to the same order each time you brush: this way you can make sure you do not miss out any teeth. And do not forget those awkward back teeth-make sure your brush reaches them and cleans them thoroughly.
5) Change your brush regularly, as a worn out brush is of little use. We can advise you on the type and size of brush that is appropriate to you. Many people prefer to use electric brushes. These do a lot of the work for you, and give you a very thorough clean.
6) Watch your diet, and be particularly aware of the dangers of sugary foods and fizzy drinks. If you do have a "sweet tooth", it will help to have an extra brush about one hour after consuming sugary foods and fizzy drinks.
Do ask us for advice on cleaning and oral care. We can help you take better care of your mouth, and help you prevent problems from developing in future.
A hygiene appointment with the dental therapist will support your daily cleaning by removing plaque and giving your teeth a full scale and polish.
